Ingredients
  

For the Burger Patties
  • 1 large sweet potato peeled and diced
  • 1 cup canned black beans drained and rinsed
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon cumin
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 egg or flax egg for vegan option

Method
 

  1. Cook the Sweet Potatoes: Start by cooking the diced sweet potatoes until they turn soft and tender. You can roast them in the oven at 400°F for about 20 minutes or boil them until easily pierced with a fork. Allow them to cool slightly before mixing them with the other ingredients.
  2. Mash the Base: Place the cooked sweet potatoes in a large bowl and mash them gently with a fork. Add the black beans and mash again just enough to break them apart while keeping some texture. This combination creates the hearty base that gives the burger both structure and flavor.
  3. Add Flavor and Binding: Stir in the breadcrumbs, chopped onion, minced garlic, smoked paprika, cumin, salt, and pepper. Add the egg or flax egg and mix everything together until the ingredients combine into a thick mixture that holds together easily.
  4. Form the Patties: Divide the mixture into equal portions and shape them into burger patties using your hands. Aim for patties that are about three quarters of an inch thick so they cook evenly while staying sturdy.
  5. Chill the Patties: Place the shaped patties on a plate and let them rest in the refrigerator for about 20 minutes. This step helps them firm up and makes them easier to cook without breaking apart.
  6. Cook the Burgers: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Place the patties gently into the pan and cook for about 4 to 5 minutes on each side until a golden crust forms. Flip carefully with a spatula so they stay intact.
  7. Toast the Buns: While the patties cook, lightly toast the burger buns in another pan or under a broiler. Warm buns add a little crunch and make the burger feel more complete.
  8. Assemble and Serve: Place the cooked patties on toasted buns and add lettuce, tomato, avocado, or your favorite toppings. Finish with a spoonful of sauce or spread for extra flavor and moisture.
